Taking a typing test

Where to find it
Dashboard > Type Open it

A typing test is one run against a stream of words. Set it up with the pills above the typing area, then start typing and the test begins. Restart starts the run again, and pressing Escape does the same.

The modes

  • time runs for a fixed length of time, chosen from the row beside it.
  • words runs until a set number of words has been typed.
  • quotes uses a real passage in a short, medium or long length.
  • zen is free typing with no clock and no target. Nothing is saved from a zen run, on purpose.

For time and words, two more pills add punctuation and numbers, and a third chooses the word pool: English, or My words, which is built from the words mastered in the Learning pathway.

What the result screen says

The big figure is words per minute, with accuracy beside it. Underneath:

  • raw counts everything typed. The plain figure counts only what was typed correctly, which is why a sloppy fast run scores lower than it felt.
  • consistency measures how even the pace was from start to finish.
  • characters breaks down what was wrong, extra or missed.

A chart shows speed through the test and a heatmap shows accuracy by key, so it is clear which fingers are costing the most.

Which runs count on a board

A run reaches a leaderboard only when it is finished, accurate enough, and typed on that board's plain settings. Switching on punctuation or numbers, or using the My words pool, makes a run practice rather than a ranked attempt. The result screen says which it was: it is tagged either as counted on a board or as a practice run.
