Places, type and students come from the Department's list of opportunity classes (NSW Department of Education, CC BY), checked on 30 October 2026. Regions are our grouping. A school name that links has its own page; the others are added as each page is written and checked. The Department gives OC places as totals; the split between girls and boys follows the gender parity model below.

How the places are shared out

Equal places for girls and boys

From the 2027 intake, every opportunity class offers the same number of places to girls and to boys. In a 15-place class that means 7 places for boys, 7 for girls and 1 on merit, which goes to the highest-scoring remaining student of either gender. If one group cannot fill its share, the spare places go to the other.

The Equity Placement Model

Up to 20% of the places at each school are held for students from four groups. The first 80% of places go on test results alone, and equity students who reach that level outright take one of those. The held places then go to equity students whose results are within 10% of the lowest score that received a first-round general offer. Places that are not filled go back to general applicants. Families do not apply for this; the Department identifies students from the application and its own records, and nobody is told whether an offer came from a held place.

How your list of schools is used

  • You list up to four opportunity class schools on one application, in order of preference.
  • Your child is considered for every school on the list on test results alone. Listing a school first earns no extra consideration.
  • Your child receives one offer at most: from the highest-listed school whose required level they reached. Lower choices then show "Not applicable".
  • You cannot decline an offer to take one from a lower choice, so list only schools your child would attend, in the order you would choose them.

Questions parents ask

What is an opportunity class?

A full-time class for Years 5 and 6 inside an ordinary public primary school, for academically gifted students. The school keeps its mainstream classes alongside it.

How many OC schools can we apply for?

Up to four, in order of preference, on one application. Your child is considered for each on test performance alone and receives at most one offer, from the highest-listed school whose required level they reached.

How are places split in a 15-place class?

Under the Department's gender parity model, 7 places go to boys, 7 to girls and 1 on merit to the highest-scoring remaining student. A 30-place setting offers equal places to girls and boys.

Who can apply for Aurora College's virtual opportunity class?

Only students who will be enrolled in Year 5 at an authorised rural or remote host school, outside areas with an existing opportunity class. Students stay at their own school and join live online lessons.

Why does a school show no 2028 intake?

Blaxland East and Glenbrook Public Schools take new Year 5 students in alternate years. The directory shows whichever one has no intake in the current year.
