The Selective High School Placement Test is an important assessment for entry into New South Wales Selective High Schools. The test evaluates students' abilities across four key areas:
Section | Duration | Number of Questions | Response Type | Weighting |
---|---|---|---|---|
Reading | 40 mins | 30 | Multiple Choice | 25% |
Mathematical Reasoning | 40 mins | 35 | Multiple Choice | 25% |
Thinking Skills | 40 mins | 40 | Multiple Choice | 25% |
Writing | 30 mins | 1 | Open Response | 25% |
The Selective test consists of four sections: Reading test (30 questions in 40 min), Mathematical Reasoning test (35 questions in 40 min), Thinking Skills test (40 questions in 40 min), and Writing test (1 question in 30 min). All sections contain multiple choice questions, except for the Writing section which is a written long response.
This section provides an in-depth look at each component of the NSW Selective High School Placement Test.
The Reading section evaluates students' ability to understand and interpret written texts. It features a variety of genres, including fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and articles. Key aspects tested include:
This section assesses the application of mathematical concepts and problem-solving skills. It is designed to test reasoning rather than mere memorization of formulas, with questions aligned with the NSW K-10 Syllabus (Years 1-5).
This section measures students' ability to think logically and solve problems using verbal, spatial, and numerical reasoning. It includes a range of question types that challenge students to apply their reasoning skills in new contexts.
In the Writing section, students are asked to produce a piece of writing on a given topic. This section tests student ability to organize their thoughts, use appropriate language, and convey ideas effectively.
Results are no longer a mark. They are a ranking of your child's performance relative to other students who sat the test in the same year.
Students are placed into one of four bands for each section:There are approximately 4000 places available in year 7 each year and roughly 15000 students sit the exam. With this in mind, entry would be granted to students who average in the top 27% across all sections of the exam. For entry into the top selective high schools, aim to average in the top 10% of students.
Because the sections of the exam are not weighted uniformly, the following formula is necessary to roughly estimate your Average Percentile:
Where R = Reading, MR = Mathematical Reasoning, TS = Thinking Skills, W = Writing.
Assume that you are at the bottom of your band. So if you are in the "10% of students" band, assume your percentile is 90% for that section. For the "50% of students" band, assume your percentile is 25% for that section.
Here is an example calculation for Average Percentile:
This student would roughly be in the 46th percentile.
The calculations above are reliable for the most part, but in reality it's a little more complicated than this becuase of the Equity Placement Model.
The Equity Placement Model works by:The percentages of held places for students in each equity group are as follows:
Equity group | % of places held |
---|---|
Students from low socio-educational advantage backgrounds | 10% |
Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students | 5% |
Rural and remote students | 2.5% |
Students with disability | 2.5% |
